The bishops were attending a summit on the plight of Christians in the Middle East and the statement will strike a chord in Gaza, which has one of the oldest Christian communities.

The Greek Orthodox Church conmmunity in the territory is just one of several Christian communities in the Gaza Strip that are less obvious than their counterparts in Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Russia has re-issued an international arrest warrant for Ahmed Zakaev (pic), a prominent figure among Chechen militants of the past. The man lives in Britain, where he was provided political asylum.

Zakaev is charged with a number of crimes in Russia, including the organization of gangs, attempted murder and attempted overturning of constitutional order. In 2001 he was put on the international wanted list.
