NEW YORK, Dec 7 (Bernama) -- While other countries provide the bulk of students pursuing courses at universities in the United States, the number of Malaysian students is nearing the 6,000 mark.
According to 'Open Doors 2009', a survey contained in the annual report of the Institute of International Education, 5,942 Malaysian students enrolled at US universities at the end of last year.
Malaysia ranked 21st -- after Nigeria but before Kenya and Pakistan -- as far as the number of its students in the US are concerned.
The number of Malaysian students accounted for 0.9 per cent of the total number of foreign students studying in the US.
India, at 103,260 students, rules the roost and accounts for the maximum share of some 15.4 per cent of the total number of foreign students studying at US universities.
For the eighth consecutive year, India accounted for the largest number of foreign students to the US, topping 100,000 for the first time for any country, according to the survey.
Close on its heels is China, followed by South Korea, Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Turkey, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia.
Other Asean countries that surpassed Malaysia's figure were Thailand and Indonesia.
