Securing south Sudan

 : By increasing the Police Force.

January 31, 2010 | A peace deal in 2005 ended the second Sudanese civil war and established southern Sudan as an autonomous region within the country.

However, the region remains plagued with intra-tribal conflicts as it prepares for local and national presidential this year followed by a referendum on independence in 2011.

The World Trade Organisation has reaffirmed its commitment to fight trade protectionism, at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

But many of the ministers have blamed the U.S. of foot-dragging.

Quakes 'decade's worst disasters'

Earthquakes can devastate wide areas in a matter of seconds  

Almost 60% of the people killed by natural disasters in the past decade lost their lives in earthquakes, a UN-backed report has revealed.

Storms were responsible for 22% of lives lost, while extreme temperatures caused 11% of deaths from 2000 to 2009.

Davos PreviewUnpleasant news hit the World Economic Forum on Tuesday, after local authorities aid they had found the police commander heading security dead, in what looked like a suicide.

A Pakistani news presenter asked Robert Gates, the U.S. secretary of defence as he touched down in Islamabad for the first time since the Obama administration took office. The surprised Pentagon chief dodged the question, but Gates and other officials explained that the decision to supply weapons to both countries was about building trust.

Is Washington helping stabilize the tension between India and Pakistan or fuelling an arms race?

Iran condemns Norwegian daily for reproducing Muhammad cartoons


Washington, 13 January (WashingtonTV)

Iran on Wednesday condemned a Norwegian newspaper for publishing reproductions of cartoons depicting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad.

“These types of events are contrary to religious values which are respected by divine religions,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ramin Mehmanparast, was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Afghanistan rocked by Taliban attacks on govt buildings in Kabul


The Afghan president Hamid Kazai says security's been restored to the capital, after Taliban militants launched a series of attacks on government buildings and the presidential palace. At least 5 people were killed and 38 injured after a gunbattle broke out near the Defence and Justice Ministries, and a luxury hotel used by westerners. Plice sealed off a large part of the centre of Kabul, as explosions rocked the city. The militants struck as cabinet members were being sworn in.

Iraq's "Chemical Ali" gets 4th death sentence.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) | Sun Jan 17, 2010 

- An Iraqi court sentenced Ali Hassan al-Majeed, the Saddam Hussein henchman widely known as "Chemical Ali," on Sunday to death by hanging for a 1988 gas attack that killed about 5,000 Kurds, a court official said.


Majeed, a cousin of Saddam's who earned his nickname because of his use of poison gas, was convicted for an attack on the Iraqi Kurdish town of Halabja. He already faces death sentences in three other cases.

Hong Kong's parliament is debating a controversial railway project that links the Chinese territory to the city of Guangzhou.

Opponents of the project say it is too expensive and it has drawn activists out on to the streets in protest.

Nigeria doctor 'impregnated girls and sold the babies'


Police in Nigeria have arrested a doctor suspected of impregnating girls and selling their babies.

The police said they found five pregnant girls aged between 12 and 17 at the doctor's clinic in the south-eastern town of Enugu.
