Singapore to buy French Aster-30 surface-to-air missile system

Singapore will acquire a new European-made missile system named the Aster-30, the country's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said this week.

The city-state will buy the new surface-to-air missiles to replace the aging I-HAWK, already in service for 30 years, the minister announced on Monday.

"The Aster will allow us to engage multiple threats simultaneously and from a longer distance," Dr Ng told parliament. 

The Aster, developed by French firm MBDE Systems, like the I-HAWK from U.S. contractor Raytheon, is just over five meters in length, though it is 140 kilograms lighter and has a greater range than the I-HAWK.

Both systems rely on networked sensors for targeting information, though the Aster's are more advanced. The I-HAWK has a maximum range of 45 km. 

The Aster-30 has a range of 70 km and is more effective at engaging multiple air threats simultaneously.

Singapore has the largest defense budget in Southeast Asia, due to a cashed-up government benefiting from the country's robust economic growth.

It has set aside SG$12.34 billion ($9.8 billion) for defense in 2013, up from Sg$11.83 billion the previous year, the website Defence News reported.

Iraq’s Abu Ghraib jail break!

A manhunt is underway in Iraq for hundreds of convicts, including senior al Qaeda terrorists, who broke out of Abu Ghraib prison after a military-style raid to free them, authorities said on Monday.

Between 500 to 1,000 prisoners have escaped as a result of the attack, “most of them were convicted senior members of al Qaeda and had received death sentences," said Hakim Zamili, a senior member of the security and defense committee in parliament.

Suicide bombers drove cars with explosives into the gates of the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad on Sunday night, while gunmen attacked guards with mortar fire as well as rocket propelled grenades.

Other militants held the main road, fighting off security reinforcements sent from Baghdad, as several insurgents wearing suicide vests entered Abu Ghraib on foot to help free the inmates.

Ten policemen and four militants were killed in the fighting, which continued until early Monday, when military helicopters arrived to help regain control.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the policies of the Cold War era and the subsequent unilateralism have failed, stressing that a new order is taking shape throughout the world.

“In the recent past, we have been witness to the failure of the policies of the Cold War era and the unilateralism that followed it. Having learnt lessons from this historical experience, the world is in transition towards a new international order and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) can and should play a new role,” the Leader said in an inaugural speech to the 16th NAM summit in Tehran on Thursday. 

The Leader added that the new world order should be based on the “participation of all nations and equal rights for all of them.” 

Ayatollah Khamenei underlined solidarity among all NAM member states as an “obvious necessity” in the current era for establishing this new order. 

The Leader stated that the main NAM values such as anti-colonialism, political, economic and cultural independence, non-alignment with any power blocs, and improving solidarity and cooperation among the member states remain “alive and steady” after the passage of more than five decades.

“The realities of today’s world fall short of those values, but the collective will and comprehensive efforts to change the existing realities and achieve these values, though full of challenges, are promising and rewarding,” Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out. 

The Leader further pointed to the ongoing sensitive global conditions and a crucial historical juncture and said that a new order is anticipated to be born. 

He emphasized the important role of the NAM, which is comprised of almost two-thirds of the members of the world community, in shaping that future. 

As the members of the movement, we can create a new historic and lasting role towards rescuing the world from insecurity, war and hegemony by pooling our great resources and capacities, Ayatollah Khamenei stated. 

The Leader urged comprehensive cooperation among NAM member states to achieve this goal, saying that there are quite a few countries among us that are very wealthy and enjoy high international leverage. 

The downfall of the regimes that were dependant on the US and its accomplice the Israeli regime in the North of Africa, as well as the Islamic Awakening in the region should be considered as a great opportunity by the members of the movement, the Leader added. 

The Leader added that the NAM member states can prepare a 'historic document' in order to transform the glabal management and devise the necessary executive tools to implement the plan.

The Leader expressed confidence that the establishment of an active and motivated secretariat for effective economic cooperation and cultural ties would be a great and significant help in achieving these goals. 

More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM summit, which kicked off at the expert level in Tehran on Sunday. 

NAM, an international organization with 120 member states, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. It represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.

Pentagon acknowledges Iran downed U.S. stealth drone.

A U.S. surveillance drone that went missing last week in western Afghanistan appears to have crashed in Iran, in what may be the first case of such an aircraft ending up in the hands of an adversary, Washington Post reported.

Earlier it was reported, that Iran's Army shot down a remote-controlled reconnaissance drone operated by the US military in the eastern part of the country. Iran Army's electronic warfare unit successfully targeted the American-built RQ-170 Sentinel stealth aircraft after it crossed into Iranian airspace over the border with neighboring Afghanistan. The RQ-170 is a stealth unmanned aircraft designed and developed by Lockheed Martin Company. The US military and the CIA use the drone to launch missile strikes in Afghanistan and in Pakistan's northwestern tribal region.

On Thursday Iran's supreme leader warned Israel and the United States that Tehran's response will be tough should its archenemies choose a military strike against Iran over the country's controversial nuclear program.

U.S. officials acknowledged Sunday that a drone had been lost near the Iranian border, but they declined to say what kind of aircraft was missing.

The Iranian government has not released any pictures of the recovered aircraft, which they said was downed by defense forces after it flew across the border and into the country's airspace.

The unnamed Iranian military official said that "due to the clear border violation, the operational and electronic measures taken by the Islamic Republic of Iran's Armed Forces against invading aircraft will not remain limited to the Iran's borders."

U.S. officials cast doubt on this and other Iranian assertions. "We have no indication that it was brought down by hostile fire," said a senior Pentagon official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive surveillance activity.

If an RQ-170 drone crashed in Iran, it would mark a significant setback for the U.S. military. The United States has lost less-sophisticated unmanned aircraft in recent years over Iran, but a nearly intact RQ-170 could offer a potential windfall of useful intelligence for the Iranians and their allies.

The aircraft has special coatings and a batwing-like shape that is designed to evade detection by enemy radar. The aircraft could help the Iranians better understand the vulnerabilities of U.S. stealth technology and provide them with clues on how to spot other aircraft, U.S. officials said.

The U.S. military released a short statement later Sunday on the missing drone. "The [unmanned aerial vehicle] to which the Iranians are referring may be a U.S. unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week," it said. "The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status."

A senior archaeologist at Tel Aviv University has cast doubt on the alleged Jewish heritage of Jerusalem. Israel Finkelstein's claims have been made in the face of official Israeli and biblical claims to the occupied city.

Professor Finkelstein, who is known as "the father of biblical archaeology", told theJerusalem Post that Jewish archaeologists have found no historical or archaeological evidence to back the biblical narrative on the Exodus, the Jews' wandering in Sinai or Joshua's conquest of Canaan. On the alleged Temple of Solomon, Finkelstein said that there is no archaeological evidence to prove it really existed.
