Published on Sep 2, 2012 by AlJazeeraEnglish Training operations for the Afghan Local Police, a security force separate from the Afghan National Police that operates in the more insecure and remote areas, has been suspended by the United States.

The suspension, affecting about 1,000 Afghans, comes in response to a recent rise in insider attacks in which coalition forces have been killed by Afghans in military or police uniforms.

There have been 34 friendly fire attacks this year - at least 15 in August alone - that have killed 45 international troops.

Russia 'to work with Nato on missile defence shield'.

Russia has agreed to co-operate on Nato's programme to defend against ballistic missile attacks, Nato's chief has said.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a Nato summit in Lisbon that the two sides had agreed in writing that they no longer posed a threat to one another.

'Real importance'

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said of the summit: "A period of very difficult, tense relations has been overcome."

Mr Rasmussen said: "The Nato nations and Russia have today agreed in writing that while we face many security challenges, we pose no threat to each other."

General David Petraeus, the head of US Central Command, has replaced General Stanley McChrystal as commander of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan, following the latter's removal.

Petraeus is widely seen as being instrumental in turning around US fortunes in the Iraq war, and many are waiting to see if he can he do the same in Afghanistan.

U.S. Money in Hands of the Enemy

(CBS) Billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars are fuelling corruption in Afghanistan and funding the insurgency, according to a six-month investigation by the House subcommittee on National Security and Foreign affairs.

The committee's chairman, Rep. John F. Tierney, D-Mass., told CBS News: "the business is war and the war is business and you've got 'Warlord Inc.' going on over there."

Committee investigators found that private contractors in Afghanistan have been paying local warlords, criminals, government officials and a list of others for security on Afghanistan's roads, to get much needed supplies to U.S and NATO bases. But even worse, anecdotal evidence indicates that U.S. tax dollars are also going into the hands of the Taliban, who own many of the roads and areas through which the trucking convoys have to pass, reports CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan.

14 killed in attack in Afghan capital Kabul

February 26, 2010 - At least 14 people, including three suicide bombers were killed in an attack in Afghan capital Kabul on Friday morning, local police said.

Two explosions blew up nearby City Center, a nine-story shopping building in downtown Kabul about 06:40 on Friday morning, police said.

Afghanistan rocked by Taliban attacks on govt buildings in Kabul

The Afghan president Hamid Kazai says security's been restored to the capital, after Taliban militants launched a series of attacks on government buildings and the presidential palace. At least 5 people were killed and 38 injured after a gunbattle broke out near the Defence and Justice Ministries, and a luxury hotel used by westerners. Plice sealed off a large part of the centre of Kabul, as explosions rocked the city. The militants struck as cabinet members were being sworn in.
