Clashes continue in Bangkok

AlJazeeraEnglish — May 15, 2010 — Another eight people have been killed in Bangkok as anti-government "Red Shirt" protesters continue to battle security forces on the streets of the capital.

The total death toll over the past three days now stands at 24. It is unclear if those killed were all protesters but it is known that none of the dead were soldiers.

Government troops meanwhile continue to surround the red shirt who have been camped in the centre of the capital for two months.

Troops have also been declaring certain areas "live fire zones".

Turmoil in Thailand Worsened

Soldiers are being placed in thousands around an anti-government camp in the heart of the city where at least 10 people have been killed and more than 125 wounded on Friday.

But the Red Shirts aren't backing down as they continue calls for the prime minister to step down.

UK embassy in Bangkok closes due to violence

The protesters have barricaded much of Bangkok The British embassy in Bangkok has temporarily closed following an upsurge of violence in the Thai capital.  Quinton Quayle, the British Ambassador to Thailand, told the BBC he was in the building and was monitoring the protests taking place nearby.  He advised against all but essential travel to Bangkok and other areas.  Anti-government, red-shirted protesters have been occupying parts of Bangkok since March, and a state of emergency has been called in the capital.
